Shiresmill Therapy Riding Centre
Our Group is based at Shiresmill, by Blairhall, approximately 6.5 miles west of Dunfermline and 5 miles east of Kincardine. Formerly known as Dunfermline Group RDA, we changed our name in December 2013 to Shiresmill Therapy Riding Centre. This new name better reflects where we are and what we do.
Founded in 1984 under the name of Sandydub group, we were originally based at Shieldbank Riding Centre before moving to a field at Rhynd, by Bandrum, where we operated for six years. We celebrated our 30th birthday in 2014.
We provide tuition in riding and related activities to children and people of all ages, with physical disabilities, medical conditions, learning difficulties and youngsters on the autistic spectrum. We use the horse as a training medium for learning, provide Hippotherapy by a trained physiotherapist, and vaulting to a mixed ability group.
Shiresmill Therapy Riding is a registered charity with 10 Trustees, three of whom are Office Bearers i.e. Chairman, Group Secretary and Treasurer. The ten Trustees are also members of the committee. We changed our legal status to become an SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation) in 2014.
The Group is run entirely by volunteers of all ages who give a great deal of their time to help our riders and take care of our ponies. Each riding session needs several volunteers to assist the riders – and the more helpers we have, the more riders we can cater for!
Our volunteers also give their time to do maintenance work at the Centre, yard duties and gardening in addition to the many and varied fundraising activities undertaken throughout the year to meet our average monthly running costs of £1,700.
No previous experience of working with horses is necessary as full training is given
